OVERVIEW

Show Details : THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW

This show began the rural American television trend in the 1960s during a time of great media skepticism throughout the nation and paved the way for more down-home hits such as The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. Actor Andy Griffith played the eponymous widowed sheriff of Mayberry, North Carolina who juggled the challenges of fatherhood with the responsibility of patrolling his small middle-American town. Don Knotts played the bumbling good-hearted deputy Barney Fife and a very young Ron Howard played Opie, Andy’s son. During its eight-year run, the show held steadily in the top of the Nielsen ratings and by the end of its run in 1968, The Andy Griffith Show was number one and produced the spin-off, Mayberry RFD, which lasted for three seasons. Winner of the 2004 TV Land Legend Award
