The finale of M*A*S*H, which aired on February 28, 1983, remains the highest-rated program in the history of television garnering viewership of more than 50 million people and a whopping 60% share of the television audience. The show based on the popular book and the Robert Altman directed and Oscar© nominated movie. M*A*S*H, which is short for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, was the only show on television to make the Korean War the focal point. The show centered around the very hectic schedule of this makeshift triage unit spearheaded by the wise-cracking, cocktail drinking surgeon Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce (Alan Alda). Working and playing along side Hawkeye were Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan (Loretta Swit), the very sexy head nurse, resourceful Corporal Walter “Radar” O’Reilly, chaplain Father Francis Mulcahy (William Christopher), neurotic Major Frank Burns (Larry Linville), Colonel Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) and the wacky Maxwell Q. Klinger (Jamie Farr) who tried just about anything in his power to get transferred home. The members of the 4077th M*A*S*H unit treated the incoming casualties with a careful balance of humor and dignity. Premiered September 17, 1972; |
