A first spin-off of the 1970s classic hit All in the Family, Archie Bunker’s opinionated neighbor, George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley) decided that it was time to leave his old neighborhood to move into a Manhattan high-rise apartment and exclaimed “we’re movin’ on up!”. The show focused on George, a wealthy owner of several dry cleaning stores, and his wife Louise (Isabel Sanford), who together exemplified the life of a rich African American couple, something that had not readily been seen on television at the time. Though happy in their "de-luxe apartment in the sky” their lives are still filled with everyday trials and tribulations that are fueled in many ways by their wise-cracking maid Florence Johnston (Marla Gibbs). Popular throughout its 10-year-run, the show remained on the top of the prime time television charts for years.
The Jeffersons is most widely remembered as the show that created a change in what Americans were seeing on television. Produced by television pioneer, Norman Lear, it was the first program in prime time to cast and prominently feature African Americans as successful and affluent. Also groundbreaking is the show’s interracial married couple Helen (Roxie Roker) and Tom Willis (Franklin Cover), one of television’s first. The show received eight Golden Globes nominations and fourteen Emmy nominations.
Premiered January 18, 1975
