One of the most beloved comedies in all of television history, I Love Lucy continues to transcend time. The show was originally based on My Favorite Husband, a successful radio show, where Ms. Ball was the female lead. The plots in I Love Lucy, though simple, are timeless and continue to resonate with generation after generation.
The situation comedy revolves around the extraordinary desire of the screwball red-head Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) to join her Cuban bandleader husband, Ricky (Desi Arnaz), in the show-biz spotlight. Much to Ricky’s chagrin, Lucy always had a plan to outwit him and get into show business. From stomping grapes in Italy to stalking William Holden in Hollywood to raising chickens in Connecticut, the Ricardos exploits are hilarious to say the least. Throughout the shows run, they are joined in their escapades by their older landlord neighbors, Fred and Ethel Mertz played by William Frawley and Vivian Vance.
As business partners, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball created Desilu Production and were a force to be reckoned with, creating successful television business models including using videotape instead of the antiquated kinescope as well as making the show available to individual affiliates after its original run (syndication). Also, the concept of a “hiatus” was an Arnaz/Ball brainchild because Ms. Ball needed a break from production after the off-screen birth of her son, Desi Arnaz Jr.
With these television innovations, I Love Lucy is still enjoyed around the globe over fifty years after its premiere.
Premiered October 15, 1951;
Winner of the 2007 TV Land Legend of Laughter Award
